Differences between Hairspray, the 2007 film, and the Broadway musical

We just saw Hairspray (the movie of the musical) and wow, it was so much better than I expected. But I had not seen the Broadway play. I noticed a lot of complaining (on iTunes, where the album is #1) from fans of the stage show and I wanted to know what was so different. Thanks to this Wikipedia entry, we can all take a look at what has the nitpickers so upset.
