Mash-up of the Moment: Children of the Sandstorm

The best mash-ups are those where the two songs sound like they always went together. Such is the case with "Children of the Sandstorm" which mashes Darude's "Sandstorm" with "Children" by Robert Miles. Both are old tracks, but this mashup makes them worth another listen. Blended together, they sound like they were always part of the same track. Amazing!

Somewhere I have the "Every Little Step Megamix" which is vastly superior, as one would expect, being remixed by Teddy Riley.

What was your First Mash-up?

Waaayy back in Feb, Dave asked his readers (like me) what was the first ever mash-up that got you hooked on them?

Somehow I missed this question, but found it and want to respond. I'd like to ask everyone to please join in and do the same, then add it to "Mashup Fans" or tag it with "firstmash" (or do both!).

My first thought was "Stars on 45" but that was more of a Medley than a mashup (and since all the songs we by sound alikes, it can't even be considered a megamix).

Then, I gave it more thought.

The earliest mash-up I can remember, and impressed me so much I still remember it, was "Billie Jean/Do It Again" from 1983.

This version is by "Slingshot" which I still think is one of the coolest names for a band - ever. However, there was another version by a group called "Clubhouse." Oddly coincidental, Blue recently posted on this very topic. He even knew of a Wikipedia entry on this. Wow!

Now, technically, this isn't a mash-up by today's terms. It was a re-recording and not a blending of the original Steely Dan and Michael Jackson originals. Still, it stuck with me, and was a mash-up of sorts. You can hear both versions back-to-back on "Crap From The Past" first in 2000 and again in 2003.

Anyhow, that is my first mash-up (sorta). What was yours?

Unfortunately, there’s still a hefty number of bugs, and some features are sorely lacking (experienced coders will probably be most annoyed by being forced at working in a visual environment and not being able to look at the actual code). Still, even in its current state Pipes is offering a myriad of interesting possibilities. I will, of course, leave out the simple stuff which you can do with any RSS mixer, and focus on remixing that can only be done with Pipes. Without further ado, here are five cool ways to use Pipes.

RSS: Feedity, the web feed filter

Looks like a good tool. I use Feedrinse to filter my RSS feeds but it is a chore to use. I am always looking for something easier, Feedity might be what I need.
