I Googled a bit, but really didn't see any answers to my questions about upgrading to FireFox 2.0. So, I am answering my own questions here.
Should I install Firefox 2 into a new directory?
Only if you want. But, this won't retain your bookmarks, cookies, history and extensions. A better option is to just install it into the same folder as your 1.x installation. That is to say, you can roll-over your previous install.
I recommend running MozBackup just to be safe.
Are my favorite extensions supported in Firefox 2.0?
If you are like me, you have more extensions than you can count. Chances are, some are no longer being updated, or just haven't been updated for 2.0. The Firefox installer will check for you, and if they are not compatible, it will look for updates. If updates are found, it will install them. Any that are not updated will be disabled. Later, you can always open your Sidebar and have the extention(s) check for updates.
Is it worth the trouble?
From what I've read, it is. It has a built-in restore, so you can re-open all your tabs. IE7 doesn't have this, except as an add-on (and it isn't that reliable). Also, Google Reader is one of the default RSS readers.
What are your favorite extensions?
I will just list them all, and my faves are marked with a *. I don't have time to link to them sorry. Also, some of these may no longer be needed, since 2.0 has several new features. Just sayin' ...
