Last night, out walking the dog with the family, I saw a lady out 6 houses away. She had a black Lhasa or Shitzu wandering around.
Now, I know my Yorkie will bark at anything that moves. We are training her not to, but she isn't there yet. Anyhow, I stop in my tracks because I know this is trouble.
If my dog sees hers, mine will bark and hers will too and we will have chaos.
So, I try to distract my dog (on a leash!) meanwhile hoping the lady will see us with our dog and pick hers up.
Nothing.
Well, eventually my dog sees the Shitzu and barks once. I bend down to shush her and before I know it, this Shitzu in racing towards us, growling and baring her teeth. I mean, it was on me fast!
I picked up my pooch, not wanting her to get bitten or get into it with the other dog.
Seriously, this other dog was on my like lightning!
She jumped up and bit my leg below the knee. Then jumped again and caught my shirt and tore a hole in it.
I didn't think fast enough to kick the dog, but I am not sure that would have helped. It kept rushing me, trying to bite again. I just had to dodge it, meanwhile my Yorkie is going NUTS wanting to protect me (I think). She wanted down and to tear that Shitzu apart.
Qucikly the owner came to get her dog, but it wouldn't come to her. It ran away from her and she chased it, both running circles around me. She alternated between apologies and yelling at the dog.
I wish I had a tape of this, I am sure it looked ridiculous!
They finally went another direction and I was able to walk a few houses down to see my leg.
It broke the skin but isn't bad, really. Probably will be a nasty bruise.
After a while, Cujo's owner came out and apologized over and over. I asked if it had all it's shots and she said yet.
I had to point out my bloody leg and torn shirt. I really wanted her to know what just took place.
Yes, I should have nailed her for not having a leash on the dog.
I probably could have been rude and threatened her too.
I didn't have it in me.
I was worn out, and looking back, it wasn't that big of an incident.
Still, it shook me up.
Funny how the little dogs have so much fire in 'em.
Dogs are pets, but they are still animals. They should be on a leash. Even well-trained dogs need a leash. A dog's animal nature could come out at any time, even if they are a star obedience student.
I'm fine, just really annoyed.
